Saudi Arabia announces skill based program for Pakistani workers

Saudi Arabia has announced skill based program for Pakistani workers. Saudi Arabia on Monday unveiled a new program for skilled workers in Pakistan, which will facilitate five professions in the first phase. With the launch of the skills verification program, Pakistan is the first country to benefit from it.

There are currently over 2.5 million Pakistani nationals residing in the kingdom and it is one of the main sources of remittances to the South Asian country.

Under the initiative, a dozen test centers will be set up across Pakistan to hold written and practical tests for skilled workers, and they must pass the test before they can apply for a Saudi work visa.

Initially, the kingdom selected five professions – electrician, plumber, welder, refrigeration/air conditioner, and car electrician. According to reports, these five have another 160 categories for people who want to move to Saudi Arabia on a work visa.

Test centers are located in eight different cities to conduct tests. A Saudi official said the kingdom has strong ties to Pakistan and selected it as the first country to benefit from the program.
