This weekend, are you looking for something to binge-watch but stuck for ideas? We’ve got you covered, so don’t worry and check the top 6 women-centric Pakistani dramas.
The resurgence of the strong female lead has been noticeable over the last few years. Why not watch a drama this weekend where the lead character isn’t a helpless victim?
- Kuch Ankahi
One would infer from the teaser and advertisements that Kuch Ankahi was about a man and a lady who quarrel all the time but eventually fall in love. However, the television programme goes far beyond the clichés associated with Ramadan serials. It involves a complete family, not just one guy and one woman.
Kuch Ankahi stars Sajal Aly as Aaliya, Bilal Abbas Khan as Salman, Mira Sethi as Aaliya’s older sister Samiya, and Qudsia Ali as her younger sister Tanya.
Property agents Aly and Bilal fight over real estate transactions, but that isn’t the whole story. It also addresses the multiple challenges that every woman encounters. Kuch Ankahi portrays a true family in the best way possible, one that everyone can relate to while also having a few laughs, from Samiya’s struggle to get married while constantly being pressured about her age, to Aaliya trying to make ends meet so she can pay off her father’s siblings over their house dispute, and Tanya following her dreams to become a filmmaker.
It’s still airing, so you will only be able to binge-watch five episodes — the fifth is airing on Saturday.
2. Dobara
In the television series Dobara, Hadiqa Kiani played Mehrunnisa, a character who was made a widow in the first episode and had to deal with the scorn of society. Finally being free from her late husband’s rules allows Mehrunnisa to live her life.
All women who have ever felt confined or helpless should watch Dobara. It also demonstrates the stigma a woman encounters when she marries a younger person. Her character shows that female leads in dramas can do so well if you get them right.
3. Sinf-e-Aahan
Sinf-e-Aahan had seven female leads and was one of the best dramas of 2021-2022 to watch. It’s a show for everyone, especially young people who don’t want to go down the usual route when it comes to their career options.
The show stars Sajal Aly, Yumna Zaidi, Ramsha Khan, Kubra Khan, Syra Yousuf, Dananeer Mobeen, and Yehali Tashiya Kalidasa. The seven actors take the test to qualify to enter the Pakistan Army. Each woman has their own story to tell, as well as their own achievements that are inspiring in their own way. The experiences they shared at the PMA, the friendship, the bond and the message with each character’s personality and the story was exactly what Pakistani TV was missing for so long.
4. Zindigi Gulzaar Hai
It was very remarkable to witness a powerful lady in a 2012 production. For us, Zindagi Gulzar Hai was entirely about Sanam Saeed’s Kashaf Murtaza, who repeatedly won our hearts. For some, Zindagi Gulzar Hai was about Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed as a pair.
She not only had a powerful personality, but her conversations also captured our hearts. She mentioned in the show that “they just like a woman for their own self-seeking reasons,” and it stuck with us. Zindagi Gulzar Hai draws attention to gender inequality as well as the socioeconomic gap between Kashaf and Zaroon Junaid.
5. Bakhtawar
The much-praised drama serial Bakhtawar is a story of a brave girl and her way of dealing with the dual-face society’s cruel behavior towards women. To deal with the norms of patriarchal Bakhtawar opts for the male character named Bakhtu. This drama clearly depicts the cruelty of society toward the woman who is trying to live her life without male presence.
6. Ghisi Piti Mohabbat
The 2020 Ramsha drama Ghisi Piti Mohabbat is another that has made it onto our list. We were most interested in Samia’s plot, in which she discovers that there are more important things in life than marriage, even though the drama may have provided the tension and spice you need to become engaged.
Each of her marriages, one with Wahaj Ali’s Rizwan and the other with Ali Abbas’ Basharat, teaches her a lesson to rely on herself and become a woman who is strong-headed and independent when it comes to taking care of herself, financially and emotionally.
So, which TV show among these would you like to watch this weekend?
