According to different news sources, Justin Roiland, the co-creator and voice actor of the well-known animated comedy series Rick and Morty, is reportedly facing prosecution for a domestic violence incident that took place in 2020.
In Orange County, California, Roiland, the ‘Rick and Morty’ actor, faces trial on domestic violence charges with one count each of domestic battery and false detention by threat, force, fraud, and/or deceit.
According to the report, the 42-year-old voice actor entered a not-guilty plea in 2020 and is currently awaiting trial.
He showed up in court on January 13th for a pre-trial hearing. On April 27, a second pre-trial hearing will take place. The trial’s start date, however, has not yet been set.
Variety was able to get a complaint that claimed the alleged event happened on or about January 19, 2020, and involved an anonymous lady who was dating Roiland at the time.
The court records state that Roiland was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
It’s “hard to emphasize how incorrect the recent media coverage of this situation has been,” his advocate, T Edward Welbourn, told the publication in a statement.
Speaking in Roiland’s favour, he added, “To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”
Roiland not only co-created Rick and Morty but also provides the voices for Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, the show’s namesakes. During its third season in 2018, the popular show was renewed for 70 more episodes.
Along with many other shows, he has voiced characters in Solar Opposites on Hulu, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and Fish Hooks.
