3 Reasons why Laal Singh Chaddha didn’t get much appreciation?
Laal Singh Chaddha, starring Aamir Khan, performed badly at the movie office. Experts determine if the film’s failure was caused by boycott calls or by the audience rejecting the poor content.
After almost four years, Aamir Khan made his way back to the big screen with Laal Singh Chaddha. A lot was expected of the movie because to its scale, its ₹180 crore budget, and Aamir’s celebrity. Sadly, it fell short of expectations.
Laal Singh Chaddha has made ₹49 crore rupees in seven days as of this writing throughout the country. For comparison, the Hindi-dubbed version of KGF: Chapter 2 made ₹54 crore on its first day of release. Laal Singh Chaddha has, to put it mildly, been humbled.
But why did it occur? Even though it’s true that the Hindi film business hasn’t exactly been in great shape during 2022, this failure nevertheless shocks.
There haven’t been many successful Hindi films this year, save for a few flicks like The Kashmir Files, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Stars like Ranveer Singh (Jayeshbhai Jordaar), Kangana Ranaut (Dhaakad), and Akshay Kumar (Samrat Prithviraj) have all declined. Aamir and Laal Singh Chaddha were supposed to “revive” Bollywood, according to many. The audience’s dislike the film’s content and a vocal boycott movement have been blamed for the majority of the failure of the movie. The exact cause of Laal Singh Chaddha’s downfall is still a mystery to experts.
3 Reasons why Laal Singh Chaddha didn’t get much appreciation?
Exhibitors think the film’s quality, not the boycott effort, was what ultimately did it in. Delhi-based exhibitor: “I don’t think the boycott movement had this much of an effect. Even though Padmaavat received boycott requests and even had protests, it nonetheless made over ₹100 crore in its opening weekend. Laal Singh Chaddha was simply rejected by the audience. Here, the filmmakers must take the audience’s wishes into account”.
- Negative reviews of Aamir Khan’s earlier films
The argument, however, falls apart when one considers some of the earlier movies, whose subjects were similarly poorly appreciated by critics. Aamir Khan’s earlier movies, like Thugs of Hindostan and Dhoom 3, received negative reviews as well. But due to the publicity surrounding them, they were able to have strong debuts. In comparison to Thugs of Hindostan, which debuted in 2018 with a then-record opening of ₹51 crore, Dhoom 3 grossed ₹36crore on its first day in 2013.
2. Boycott trends
Laal Singh Chaddha’s domestic first day revenue of ₹11.70 crore is insignificant by comparison. “It was a combination of both the content and the boycott but primarily the boycott trend,” says Ramesh Bala, a film trade analyst. There was a low opening. Thugs of Hindostan, Aamir’s most recent film, made ₹50 crore on its first day. Even KGF 2, which was only released in Hindi, made ₹50crore. Therefore, the fact that Laal Singh Chaddha only made 10–11 crores on its opening day indicates that audiences were not eager to visit the theatres. Earnings after the first day or even the first weekend are impacted by reviews. Low opening, however, indicates that the boycott trend also had an impact.
3. Audience’s altered tastes
According to some analysts, the movie’s genre and the audience’s changed tastes in the post-pandemic age also worked against it. Since the release of Covid-19, moviegoers have been exposed to more OTT content and now only opt to leave the house for specific types of movies. Laal Singh Chaddha was an entertaining family member. These movies are now watched more frequently on OTT than in theatres. Right today, people want to be entertained at theatres. They desire big entertainers who can persuade them to visit the theatre.
