Kareena Kapoor Khan is now promoting her new flick, Laal Singh Chaddha. But the actress is equally preoccupied with other matters. Her excitement about having a big screen release is palpable, especially with Aamir Khan, with whom she reunites after a decade (Talaash was released in 2012). Kareena has been at the vanguard of the game of reinvention. Two pregnancies and married life haven’t affected her outlook on work or dampened her love of movies.
Kareena revealed her thoughts on the current cancel culture on social media, ageism, and what she thinks of Alia Bhatt creating clips to her legendary sentences in an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.
When asked if she feels that ageism exists in Bollywood and that women over a certain age find it difficult to get work in the industry, Kareena Kapoor Khan told IndiaToday.in, “I think it’s only on social media and not in real life. Because it makes a good topic, and you’re constantly talking about it. It becomes a topic of discussion, people are writing articles, and debates are happening but in reality, we are still working, and everyone’s getting their work. If you’re talented, you will get work. If you’re looking good, you will get work. If you’re being yourself, you’ll get work.”
She further added, “Today I think everybody’s doing great work. Age is just a number and people are doing different characters and you’re as old as you look. I think that that’s what you have to go by. I mean it makes good copy to write things and say things and all that but I think this discussion looks good only on Twitter. I am still a working actor, I worked throughout my pregnancies and people who have a problem with it, don’t take me. But the fact is that I’ve shot with Aamir even when I was five and a half months pregnant. Alia is still pregnant and working and continues to work. So, it’s up to the person to break boundaries and take up the challenge.”
What does she think of the ‘cancel culture’ where everyone is quick to write off a film or have a strong opinion about everything? Kareena says, “Of course, because the accessibility is there today. Everyone has a voice today. There are different platforms. Everyone has an opinion. So now, if that is going to be there, then you have to learn to ignore certain things. Otherwise, it will just become impossible to live your life. And that’s why I don’t take any of this like seriously. I just post whatever I want to post. I am like ‘It’s a film and it’s going to release and everyone will have their opinion.’ So that’s it. If it’s a good film, I believe that it will surpass anything, pretty much, the response will be good. I think that good films will surpass anything.”
Has she seen the reels that Alia Bhatt has made to her iconic dialogues and what does she think of it? “ I don’t know. I think that it’s just [that], it’s the one iconic character that obviously everyone feels and wants to portray and play. So yeah, it just feels nice, but that’s about it. I don’t take that too seriously.”
