Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has challenged Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz’s election in the Lahore High Court, pleading for an order for a new vote after declaring the CM’s election null and void.
The case would be heard today (Friday) by LHC Chief Justice Ameer Bhatti.
PA Speaker Elahi, who also ran for chief minister during the April 16 election in the Punjab Assembly, which was ordered by the high court, named Hamza Shehbaz and others as respondents in his petition.
Mr. Elahi contended in his petition that Hamza did not receive the votes required to become chief minister in light of the Supreme Court’s new ruling on April 18, which stated that the votes of dissident members would not be counted.
It is worth noting that Hamza was elected chief minister after receiving 25 votes from PTI dissidents and that following the Supreme Court decision, he would fall short of the votes required for the chief ministerial election.
Elahi also claimed in his petition that Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari declared Hamza the winner for no reason. He asked the court to prevent Hamza from serving as Punjab’s Chief Minister. He also asked the court to overturn Hamza’s election as Punjab Chief Minister.
The petitioner also asked the court to order a new election for the CM position after Hamza was removed.
The PTI’s petition against Hamza’s election will be heard by the LHC.
The LHC will also hear a petition filed by the PTI seeking Hamza’s removal as chief minister after ruling that his election was illegal.
The petition would be heard later today by LHC Chief Justice Bhatti (Friday).
The petition named Hamza Shehbaz, Punjab Assembly Speaker, and others as respondents in the case.
According to the petition, Hamza has lost his majority in the provincial assembly as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, and his continued tenure as chief minister of the province is illegal and unconstitutional.
Mushtaq Ahmad Mohil, an advocate, filed the PTI petition.
The petition asked the court to prevent Hamza from serving as Punjab Chief Minister, as well as to issue an order directing the Punjab Chief Secretary and other high officials not to favor Hamza unduly.
