Umar Sarfaraz Cheema moves IHC against his removal as Punjab governor

PTI leader Umar Sarfaraz Cheema challenged his removal as Punjab governor in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday.

In his petition, filed through Babar Awan Advocate, he claimed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif removed him from office in violation of the rules and regulations in order to facilitate the oath-taking of his son Hamza Shehbaz as Punjab chief minister.

Cheema also sought a court order to take action against those who received the Cabinet Division’s notification.

He went on to say that a governor was the federation’s representative in a province, not a member of the executive. “He can stay in office as long as he has the president’s support.” “In light of the Supreme Court’s (SC) verdicts, a president’s powers cannot be snatched away by invoking rules,” read the petition.

In addition, the former governor stated that the notification had caused a constitutional crisis in Punjab. “As a result, it is prayed to the court that the notification of my removal from the seat is declared null and void,” Cheema concluded.

However, Asad Khan, Assistant Registrar at the Diary Branch of the court, objected to the petition, claiming that because the matter concerned a province, it did not fall under the jurisdiction of the IHC. “The court cannot hear the petition against two people who were named as respondents in the petition,” he added.
