The remand of Sheikh Rasheed’s nephew for two days after Masjid-e-Nabawi incident.
In a case involving hooliganism and the chanting of slogans against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation at Masjid-e-Nabwi in Saudi Arabia, MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, nephew of former federal minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, was granted a two-day physical remand by an Attock district and sessions court on Monday.
When Sheikh Rashid Shafiq arrived from Saudi Arabia at the Islamabad International Airport the day before, he was detained.
A heavily guarded Sheikh Rashid Shafiq was brought into court at the beginning of today’s session.
The police asked the court to remand the suspect in custody so that they could question him.
Rashid Shafiq was given a two-day remand by Judicial Magistrate Jamal Mehmood after he agreed to the police’s request and was instructed to appear in court on the second day of Eid.
In the meanwhile, the hearing was postponed until May 4 by the judge.
The nephew of Sheikh Rasheed detained
Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s nephew, MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, was detained at the Islamabad airport upon his arrival from Saudi Arabia early Sunday morning following the incident of slogan chanting against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his team at Masjid-e-Nabawi.
The sanctity of the Masjid-e-Nabawi in Madinah was broken by several demonstrators, presumably affiliated with the PTI, who yelled at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and members of his entourage.
There are reports from airport employees that Shafiq went to Pakistan on a private plane, according to sources.
Asserting his nephew’s guilt in the case, Rasheed said that his nephew had just returned from Umrah when he was apprehended.
“Despite the fact that none of us were in Saudi Arabia, we were nevertheless charged with crimes. After registering the cases, police started raiding homes.”
“Rasheed had criticised the arrest,” he claimed.
“Everywhere they went,” he said, “people were harassing [them].”
According to insiders, Shafiq had been transferred to a Federal Bureau of Investigation cell.
Muhammad Naeem had filed a complaint against Shafiq in Faisalabad’s Madina Town.
In addition to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, Shehbaz Gill, Sahibzada Jahangir, and other PTI members, 14 known and 100-150 anonymous people were charged in the case.
