LAHORE: Following the Lahore High Court’s directives, Hamza Shahbaz was sworn in as the 21st Chief Minister of Punjab on Saturday. He had been denied the oath for the previous two weeks.
On the orders of the LHC, he was sworn in by National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. The CM-elect had sought the high court’s intervention in the matter.
Despite being elected with a huge majority of 197 votes in the Punjab Assembly on April 16, Hamza moved the LHC for the third time on Friday as his oath-taking ceremony was postponed on many grounds.
Following Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema’s refusal to administer oath to him for a variety of reasons, Punjab-elect Hamza Shahbaz filed three separate applications with the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Furthermore, just hours before the inauguration, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema rejected Usman Buzdar’s resignation, claiming that constitutional prerequisites had not been met.
Hamza arrived at the Governor House in his own car, escorted by PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz.
