Samsung Wins Court Battle Over “Fake QLED” TVs in Germany

Germany has become the latest battleground in an ongoing legal dispute between major tech companies, as Samsung Electronics secured a court victory against TCL over misleading “QLED” television advertising.

Samsung successfully argued before the Munich I Regional Court that several TCL television models were marketed as “QLED” despite not using true quantum dot technology. TCL was unable to refute Samsung’s claims during the proceedings.

Quantum dot technology is used in advanced display panels to enhance color accuracy, brightness, and energy efficiency. In some Samsung televisions, ultraviolet (UV) backlights are paired with quantum dots that absorb UV light and convert it into precise visible colors. This method allows for greater control over color wavelengths compared to conventional LED technology.

According to the ruling, six different TCL TV series were found to be affected. The court ordered TCL to immediately stop advertising those models as “QLED” and to correct any misleading or false statements related to their display technology.

However, the decision is not yet legally binding, and TCL retains the right to appeal the ruling.

The dispute is not limited to Germany. Samsung has filed similar lawsuits against TCL in the United States and South Korea, accusing the company of deceptive marketing practices. Legal analysts say the outcome of the German case could influence proceedings in those jurisdictions as well.

The case highlights growing scrutiny over display technology labeling, particularly as terms like QLED, OLED, and Mini-LED become central to consumer purchasing decisions in the competitive global TV market.
