Pakistan to Redesign All Currency Notes, Introduce Plastic Polymer Banknote

The federal government of Pakistan has decided to redesign all currency notes ranging from Rs. 10 to Rs. 5,000, while also planning to introduce a plastic polymer currency note alongside traditional paper notes, sources told ProPakistani. The move aims to modernize Pakistan’s currency system and strengthen security features.

No Currency Note to Be Discontinued

According to officials, no existing banknote will be withdrawn from circulation. Instead, all denominations will be reissued with new designs and enhanced security features. The redesigned notes are expected to be introduced within the current year, according to sources in the Ministry of Finance.

Timeline for Exchange of Old Currency Notes

Pakistan currently has approximately Rs. 10,260 billion worth of currency in circulation nationwide. To ensure a smooth transition, the government will issue a clear and structured timeline to commercial banks for exchanging old notes with newly designed ones.

Officials stressed that the process will be carried out without disrupting daily cash transactions or market liquidity.

Introduction of Plastic Polymer Currency Note

Under the proposed plan, one denomination will be introduced as a plastic polymer note, while the remaining denominations will continue as paper-based currency. The polymer note will be made from a special plastic material and initially tested for durability and lifespan.

If the polymer note proves to be more durable and cost-effective than paper currency, the government may consider expanding its use to other denominations in the future.

Enhanced Security Features to Curb Counterfeiting

Officials said the redesigned currency notes will include advanced security elements, modern printing techniques, and updated visual designs. These changes are intended to reduce counterfeiting, improve note durability, and align Pakistan’s currency with international standards.

Cabinet Approval and Rollout Plan

Sources revealed that formal approval from the Federal Cabinet will be sought shortly to launch the new currency series. Once approved, authorities plan to roll out all redesigned banknotes within the year, ensuring a gradual and well-managed replacement process.
