Inhaler prices doubles amid smog

Multan and several parts of South Punjab are facing a heavy smog crisis, causing a critical shortage of inhalers and a sharp rise in their prices.

Air Quality Index

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the region has increased above 500, making it extremely difficult for people with respiratory illnesses to cope.

Asthma patients in Multan are struggling to breathe as toxic air fills the city. Pharmacies report that inhalers, once priced at Rs 300–400, now cost as much as Rs 1,500–1,600. “Where can a poor person go?” asked one patient. “Asthma patients, people with coughs, and those with breathing problems are all struggling.”

Government hospitals have treated over 1,200 smog-affected patients in the past week. Doctors are urging people to take precautions, especially if they cannot find inhalers.

Medical recommendations

Medical experts recommend washing hands regularly, using sanitiser, wearing masks, avoiding hot rooms, and staying away from people with colds or flu.

Pharmacists are also worried about the ongoing shortage.

“We are placing orders with companies two to three times a week, but there has been no response,” said one medical store owner.

“Prices have increased, and we see four to five patients daily, sometimes more, facing serious problems.”

Citizens are calling on the government to take urgent action to ensure the immediate availability of essential medicines.
