Former DG FIA Bashir Memon said on Tuesday that he preferred to resign than filing ‘fake’ corruption cases against Shehbaz Sharif, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) and President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), his sons Hamza and Suleman Shehbaz, and Captain (r) Safdar, the son-in-law of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
He told the journalists outside the court following the hearing on his demand for a temporary bail extension that the Sharif family’s economic dealings were not ‘fishy.’
Memon’s lawyer told the court earlier that he had filed two applications in the Lahore High Court (LHC). “Until the high court rules on these applications, it is urged that the court extend the interim bail given to my client,” he said.
The matter was then deferred to April 5th by the court.
When asked if any PML-N office-bearers had called him or shown appreciation for his work, the former FIA DG responded that there was nothing wrong with calling or speaking with a PML-N leader. “However,” he stated emphatically, “I am not a politician.”
