Qureshi emphasizes the need of de-escalation amid Ukraine-Russia crisis

In a call with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi emphasized the “need for de-escalation” as Kyiv fights a Russian invasion.

“Foreign Minister Qureshi shared Pakistan’s perspective in detail, reiterating serious concern about the situation, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation, and emphasizing the indispensability of diplomacy,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said of Pakistan’s top diplomat’s telephonic conversation with Ukraine’s Kuleba.

He went on to say that Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif “had believed diplomacy could avert a military war.”

“Violence was never in anyone’s interest, and in the event of a conflict, developing countries were always the hardest impacted economically,” Qureshi remarked.

He went on to say that Islamabad believes that problems should be handled through conversation and diplomacy.

Pakistan’s top diplomat also discussed the problem of the Pakistani community and students in Ukraine being evacuated and safely returned to Pakistan.

He praised Ukraine’s assistance in the “evacuation process” and requested “continued facilitation and a smooth border crossing as soon as feasible.”

Following President Vladimir Putin’s declaration of war, Russia began an invasion by land, air, and sea on Thursday. As explosions and gunfire rocked major cities, an estimated 100,000 people fled. Hundreds of people have been slain, according to reports.

According to US and Ukrainian authorities, Russia is attempting to seize Kyiv and destabilize the administration, which Putin perceives as a US puppet. As they pushed along the quickest route from Belarus to Kyiv, Russian troops seized the Chernobyl former nuclear power facility north of Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president’s administration announced that negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow would take place near the Belarusian-Ukrainian border on the fourth day of the greatest attack on a European state since World War Two. It stated that they will meet without conditions.

Despite the Russian shelling of civilian infrastructure, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv remains in government control, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy rallying his people.
