KARACHI: PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari declared Friday that he will challenge the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (PECA) ordinance in court, assuring the media of his everlasting support.
He made the remarks at Bilawal House at a meeting with the office-bearers of the Pakistani media’s joint action committee.
During the discussion, the delegation expressed their worry over the PTI government’s draconian policies aimed at stifling social, electronic, and all media through the PECA and other laws, which severely restrict all citizens’ fundamental right to freedom of expression.
PECA ordinance is dubbed a “fascist, dictatorial” measure by opposition leaders.
According to The News, the PPP chairman told members that his party will uphold its manifesto commitment to press freedom in all forms and content, and urged the PPP team to oppose laws in the courts as well as all forms of political, parliamentary, and social expression.
He also promised the JAC delegation of his steadfast support and the party’s entire solidarity in the combined effort to defend the people of Pakistan’s inalienable fundamental, constitutional, and democratic rights.
The All Pakistan Newspapers Society, Pakistan Broadcasters Association, Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors, and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors were among the members.
