PPP leader Rehman Malik dies at 70

Rehman Malik, a senior politician and former interior minister, died on Wednesday morning at the age of 70.

According to his spokesperson, Riaz Ahmad Turi, the PPP senator was hospitalised in Islamabad due to COVID-19-related issues, and his lungs were seriously injured.

His spouse and two sons are his only survivors.

Malik’s condition had deteriorated, and he had been placed on a ventilator, according to PPP Senator Sehar Kamran, who announced it on Twitter on February 1.

From 2008 to 2013, Malik was the country’s interior minister, having obtained an honorary doctorate from the University of Karachi. He was one of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s closest advisors.

The Pakistani government honoured him with one of the country’s highest civilian honours, the Sitara-e-Shujat, for his contributions (the Star of Bravery). The state also bestowed upon him one of the most important civil honours, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Order of Excellence).

Condolences

Condolences began to flood in from all corners of the country after news of his death broke.

“The death of former Interior Minister Rehman Malik has pained me greatly. May Allah pardons him and offers his family patience “Ahsan Iqbal, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), tweeted on Twitter.

“I was deeply grieved to learn about Senator #RehmanMalik’s untimely death. Indeed, this is a great loss. May Allah swt grant him eternal rest. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies to the family “Mumtaz Ali Chandio, a member of the Sindh Assembly, stated.

Hina Butt, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), also conveyed her sorrow over Rehman Malik’s demise.
