Nawaz Sharif's return as PM sparks speculation amidst PML-N leadership

When will Nawaz Sharif choose Punjab CM? After the February 8th general elections, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has emerged as the dominant force in the Punjab Assembly, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape of the province.

When will Nawaz Sharif choose Punjab CM?

Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, a prominent figure within the party, revealed in a press conference held on Sunday that the decision regarding the next chief minister of Punjab will be made by the party’s leader, Nawaz Sharif, shortly.

Tarar emphasized the ongoing discussions within the PML-N as they engage with their allies to finalize a suitable candidate for the crucial role of the province’s chief executive.

Expressing confidence in the party’s prospects, Tarar projected an increase in the PML-N’s representation in the Punjab Assembly to 160 seats, reflecting the party’s strong showing in the recent elections.

However, amidst the PML-N’s success, Tarar voiced concerns over attempts to undermine the credibility of the election results.

He criticized unnamed parties, likely referring to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for celebrating victories in certain regions while casting doubt on the outcomes elsewhere.

Tarar stressed the importance of respecting the democratic process and urged all parties to uphold the integrity of the electoral mandate.

Furthermore, Tarar acknowledged the electoral setbacks experienced by some prominent PML-N figures, including Khawaja Saad Rafique and Rana Sanaullah.

Despite these challenges, the PML-N secured a significant lead in the Punjab Assembly with 138 seats, followed by PTI-backed independents with 116 seats.

Other independent candidates clinched 22 seats, while smaller parties such as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Independents Power Project (IPP), Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), and Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) secured a single seat each.

The outcome of the general elections has set the stage for intense political maneuvering in Punjab, with the PML-N poised to play a central role in shaping the province’s future trajectory.
