Govt approves new electoral code of conduct permitting ministers to run compaigns

The federal government has passed a momentous revision to the electoral code of conduct that allows ministers and lawmakers to run candidate poll campaigns.

The federal cabinet gave its approval to an ordinance drafted to bring about the desired adjustments in the code of conduct via a summary circulation.

According to insiders, misgivings from all political parties are also cited as a justification for amending the code of conduct.

The decree has been forwarded to the Aiwan-i-Sadr after receiving permission from the federal cabinet, according to sources, and will be enforced after receiving President Dr. Arif Alvi’s approval.

Previously, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would issue reprimands and fines to parliamentarians for violating the code of conduct.
