ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Attorney General Khalid Javed has denied submitting a complaint against Islamabad’s Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal over his decision in the case of journalist Mohsin Baig.
The government declared on Thursday that it would submit a complaint against the judge after he found the FIA raid on the senior journalist’s house was illegal.
On the complaint of Communications and Postal Services Minister Murad Saeed, the FIA and police stormed the journalist’s home in the federal capital on Wednesday and brought him into jail.
The journalist has been a vocal critic of the government’s policies and has appeared as an analyst on TV discussion shows.
According to the AGP, the government would not submit a complaint against Islamabad’s Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal.
He stated that references should not be submitted solely on a judge’s verdicts and should only be filed if evidence or an appeals court ruling reveals the judge’s misconduct.
AGP Khalid Javed believes that a review petition, but not a referral, can be brought against the judgment.
Reference against Islamabad judge
A court in Islamabad declared the FIA’s raid on journalist Mohsin Baig’s home illegal on Wednesday, only hours after he was arrested.
“…an illegal raid was conducted at the house of [Baig] by irrelevant persons who were not entitled to do so,” wrote Additional Sessions Judge Islamabad West Zafar Iqbal in a ruling on a petition challenging the journalist’s detention.
According to Pakistani media sources, Niazullah Niazi, the Advocate General of Islamabad, met with Prime Minister Imran Khan and informed him on the issue.
Niazullah Niazi said after meeting with the prime minister that an administrative petition will be filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the judge who presided over Mohsin Baig’s case hearing.
