PM Imran lands in Beijing on official trip

BEIJING: Prime Minister Imran Khan landed in Beijing on Thursday for a four-day official visit, where he will join other world leaders at the Beijing Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony on Friday.

The premier would also meet with the Chinese leadership, accompanied by a high-level group that included federal cabinet ministers.

The prime minister’s delegation includes Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf, Commerce Advisor Abdul Razak Dawood, and Special Assistant on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Khalid Mansoor.

PM Imran was greeted by China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao when he arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport. Moeenul Haq, Pakistan’s ambassador in Beijing, was also there, as were senior embassy officials.

Imran Khan will meet President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in addition to attending the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

The two presidents will discuss ways to expand bilateral trade and economic relations, notably under the CPEC framework, as well as regional and international issues, during the meeting.

Other bilateral meetings are also on the prime minister’s agenda during the tour, in addition to virtual exchanges with significant Chinese business executives, leading think tanks, academics, and the media.

This is the prime minister’s fourth visit to China, with the most recent being in October of this year.

Prior to his visit, Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered the removal of red tape that was impeding Chinese investment in Pakistan, stating that “37 regulations must be removed to ensure one-window operation for international companies.”

Pakistan and China aided each other in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and pushed for high-quality CPEC development, with Beijing investing more than $25 billion in Pakistan for CPEC projects that have created 80,000 jobs, generated 5,500 KW of electricity, and built more than 500 kilometres of roads.
