Miftah Ismail, a former finance minister, was fired by the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday. Why Maryam Nawaz removed Miftah Ismail from the party position?

Maryam Nawaz, the chief organizer for the PML-N, announced the decision and also voiced her “disappointment” with Miftah and Shah Muhammad Shah, who was also kicked out of the party.

Shah Muhammad Shah, the province president, and Miftah Ismail, the general secretary, would be fired as part of the efforts to reorganize Sindh, according to Maryam Nawaz.

As Maryam Nawaz removes Miftah Ismail from the party position, according to claims in the local media quoting PML-N sources, Miftah won’t be given any significant party positions in the future.

Why Maryam Nawaz removed Miftah Ismail from party position?

Following his dismissal from the position of Finance Minister, Miftah Ismail recently openly expressed his disagreement with the party leadership and its policies.

The former minister recently made reference to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who declared last week—without mentioning anyone in particular—that those who criticize current Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had no place in his party.

The policies of Ishaq Dar have been openly criticized by Miftah Ismail.

Miftah Ismail is a Pakistani political economist who served as the Federal Minister of Finance from April 2022 to September 2022.

He had previously served in the same office, from April 2018 to May 2018 in Khaqan Abbasi’s cabinet.

Prior to that, he served as the Advisor on Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs, chairman of the Pakistan Board of Investment, and an economist with the International Monetary Fund.

He was born on 23 July 1965 in Karachi, Sindh.

Ismail received his undergraduate degree in business from Duquesne University in 1985, followed by a Ph.D. in public finance and political economy from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in 1990.

Ismail worked with the International Monetary Fund as an economist based in Washington, D.C. in the early 1990s.
