Cabinet approves curbing Suo-Motu powers of CJP

Suo-Motu powers

On Tuesday night, the Federal Cabinet gave its approval to the Supreme Court Amendment Bill 2023, which transfers the Suo-Motu powers to the committee.

The proposed bill will eventually be presented in the National Assembly.

The decision to grant a right of appeal on Suo-Motu was made at the cabinet meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The Suo-Motu notice will be decided by the Supreme Court’s three senior-most judges, according to the proposed bill.

The Suo-Motu decision is subject to an appeal, which may be made within 30 days of the decision’s publication. The appeal’s hearing date must be set within 14 days of the appeal’s filing.

The bureaucracy was instructed to leave the room just before the meeting began, and the cabinet began to discuss a one-point agenda.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and other ministers also participated in the meeting.

Shazia Marree of the PPP attempted to enter the cabinet meeting, but security personnel prevented her from doing so because she was carrying a purse and electronic devices. She retorted angrily, “Her absence should be marked,” in response.
