Ban on Imran Khan’s speech: AEMEND asks PEMRA to revoke decision

The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) has rejected PEMRA ban on PTI chairman Imran Khan, calling it a violation of basic fundamental rights.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has ordered that all satellite TV channels refrain from broadcasting live or recorded speeches by former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan.

AEMEND stated in a statement released on Sunday that the Pakistani constitution allows everyone to speak and write within the legal framework and that in the event of a violation, the state and institutions have the right to act in accordance with the law.

The association demanded that the PERMRA immediately lift the ban on broadcasting speeches by PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

Television channels have their own institutional framework and efficient delay system, in accordance with PEMRA regulations. Even though it is against the law, it is still illegal to forbid all television networks from airing any political leader’s speech or conversation using this pretext.

AEMEND has previously protested and successfully battled against the prohibition of expression without prejudice.

PEMRA calls on PEMRA to respect freedom of expression and refrain from taking such needless, unlawful, and anti-expression measures.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is an independent and constitutionally established federal institution responsible for regulating and issuing channel licenses for the establishment of the mass media culture, print, and electronic media.
