Pakistan was one of the 32 UN members that voted against the Resolution on Ukraine during the 11th Emergency session of the UN General Assembly.
The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted and approved a resolution on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling on Russia to end the war and “immediately” withdraw its forces.
141 of the 193 UNGA members voted in favor of the resolution during the voting process. 32 members supported the resolution, while 7 were opposed. Pakistan, China, Iran, India, and others did not participate in the vote.
Explaining the reason for abstention, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram said Pakistan fully supports the resolution’s call for respect for the principles of sovereignty, sovereign equality, and territorial integrity of States and non-acquisition of territory by the threat or use of force but regretted that these principles have not been universally applied and respected.
Meanwhile, India also refrained from voting in the UN General Assembly on a resolution on Thursday that emphasized the need for a “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace” in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter.
The 193-member General Assembly approved the draught resolution titled “Principles of the Charter of the United Nations underlying a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” which was proposed by Ukraine and its supporters.
The resolution, which got 141 votes in favor and 7 against, “underscores the need to reach, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” India was among the 32 countries that abstained.
