LAHORE: In a single day, 28 new Omicron cases were diagnosed in Lahore, the capital of Punjab, increasing the total number of cases of the novel COVID-19 strain to 271 in the city.
According to provincial health department authorities, there have been 280 Omicron cases found in Punjab, with 271 cases reported from Lahore.
“Stopping the spread of the new type of coronavirus in Lahore has become a challenge for the province authorities,” they stated, adding that the positive rate in the provincial capital has reached 5.7 percent.
The coronavirus’s fifth wave appears to be intensifying in Pakistan, which has recorded 1,345 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the third day in a row with more than 1,000 infections.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the country’s nerve centre for Covid reaction, a total of 46,537 samples were tested, with 1,345 proving positive, resulting in a national positivity rate of 2.89 percent.
One more person has died from the virus in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have died to 28,962. Covid patients in critical care at several hospitals around the country have been reduced to 629.
According to an AFP assessment based on government data, the total number of Covid-19 cases reported worldwide since the outbreak began has surpassed 300 million.
