ISLAMABAD: The coronavirus’s fifth wave appears to be intensifying, with Pakistan reporting 1,345 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the third day in a row with more than 1,000 infections.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the country’s nerve centre for Covid reaction, a total of 46,537 samples were tested, with 1,345 proving positive, resulting in a national positivity rate of 2.89 percent.
One more person has died from the virus in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have died to 28,962. Covid patients in critical care at several hospitals around the country have been reduced to 629.
According to an AFP assessment based on government data, the total number of Covid-19 cases reported worldwide since the outbreak began has surpassed 300 million.
In the last week, more over 13.5 million illnesses were found worldwide, a staggering increase of 64% over the previous seven days, averaging 1,938,395 new infections every day.
