Federal government tables ‘mini budget’ in Senate

ISLAMABAD: Federal government tabled Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2021, often known as the mini-budget, in the Senate on Tuesday.

Financial Minister Shaukat Tarin introduced the finance bill amid raucous opposition protests.

The finance supplementary bill, also known as the mini-budget, seeks adjustments to the income tax, sales tax, and federal excise duty to impose Rs375 billion in taxing measures and remove the Rs343 billion sales tax exemption, which it had already tabled in the National Assembly.

Traders and businesspeople have requested the government to remove the 17% mobile phone sales tax from the mini-budget.

Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a directive to government spokespersons yesterday to fight the opposition parties’ “false narrative” on the recently presented financial bill.

While chairing a meeting of party spokespersons attended by federal ministries and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, the prime minister issued directions.

During the meeting, the prime minister reassured the attendees on the country’s economic situation. The delegates were informed on the Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2021 by PM Khan and Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen.

While speaking with spokespersons, the prime minister issued directives to “remove the public’s confusion over the mini-budget.”

While speaking to reporters, the premier stated that other economic achievements of the government, such as agriculture sector growth and domestic exports, must be recognised.

Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin introduced the Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2021, as well as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Amendment Bill 2021, in the National Assembly last week.
