IHC dismisses ban on firework on New Year's Eve in federal capital

ISLAMABAD: A writ petition seeking a ban on firework in the federal capital on New Year’s Eve was dismissed by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday.

The petition submitted by a resident of Islamabad was dismissed as non-maintainable by an IHC bench led by Chief Justice Athar Minallah.

IHC has dismissed the ban on firework on New Year’s Eve in the federal capital;

“Let people enjoy,” remarked the top IHC judge. “This happens across the world, not just in Pakistan.”

According to the petitioner, a no-objection certificate (NOC) was obtained by the Islamabad deputy commissioner for a fireworks display outside a commercial complex near GT Road. He claims that fireworks last 30 minutes and attract enormous crowds, causing traffic congestion.

He asked the Supreme Court to order the deputy commissioner to revoke the NOC.

On the eve of New Year’s Eve, the Lahore district government banned public concerts, fireworks displays, aerial gunfire, and other celebratory festivities.

Because of the growing pollution situation in the provincial capital, the ban was implemented. The government also turned down all proposals for a New Year’s Eve fireworks show in the megacity.

IHC was originally established on 14 August 2007 by the Presidential Order of Pervez Musharraf, the military ruler at the time.
