Sindh Govt to launch electric taxi in Karachi
The Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, made the announcement while speaking to the media following an inspection of the development of the Bus Rapid Transport Red Line Project, which was started in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank. The government of Sindh plans to launch a modern, affordable, and environmentally friendly electric taxi (e-taxi) service in Karachi, which would soon be expanded to other major cities in the province.
According to the minister, talks to provide an electric taxi (e-taxi) service in Karachi are already in progress, and the provincial administration is trying to complete the project. The minister said, “The city’s existing online taxi services were charging excessively high fees, and the province government was working to offer a reasonable answer to the citizen.”
In order to address the city’s long-standing commute issue, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership has directed that all ongoing projects related to public transportation in Karachi be completed as quickly as possible, he continued. He claimed that the government had started a multibillion-dollar public transportation project and that the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) was working around the clock to expand the city’s bus fleet and upgrade the transportation system.
Speaking of other ongoing transportation initiatives, he noted that Sindh was the nation’s first province to introduce an electric bus service. It is important to note that the Karachi Transportation Department tested its brand-new battery-powered passenger buses earlier this month on city roads.
