Punjab to implement SNC for secondary classes next year
The Single National Curriculum (SNC) textbooks up to Class 8 must be printed by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB) per a directive from the Punjab School Education Department (SED), and must be on the market by 1 April 2023.
Institutions that want to use books other than those required for the core curriculum must first obtain permission from the PCTB, according to the officials. They also mention hefty consequences, such as fines ranging from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 500,000 for breaching laws and regulations, for schools that deviate from the SNC.
According to authorities, the SED also plans to develop an SNC syllabus for Classes 9 and 10. They also stated that the textbooks will be available before April 2024. The Center for Social Justice and the Working Group for Inclusive Education (WGIE) found that the modified curriculum did not include the majority of the changes suggested to the National Curriculum Council for English, Urdu, Geography, and History after reviewing the final core curriculum for secondary classes.
The Punjab government is turning schools into seminaries, restricting the scope of instruction in science, math, and social sciences, the WGIE claims, while ignoring educational losses brought on by the epidemic and other factors.
All students should have access to the same educational system, including the same curriculum, teaching methods, and evaluation tools, to ensure that they are given a fair and equal chance to get a top-notch education. A step in that approach is the Single National Curriculum.
