The electricity tariff is set to increase by Rs4.33 due to fuel charges adjustment, as the National Electrical Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) received a request for the increase from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

On December 29, the NEPRA will hold a hearing on the request. If NEPRA approves the plea, consumers will be saddled with an additional Rs40 billion charge.

For the month of November, the CCPA has proposed a rise under the fuel adjustment.

In its appeal, the CPPA claims that 8.24 billion units of energy were generated in November at a cost of Rs66 billion.

The most expensive electricity was generated by diesel and furnace oil, which cost Rs20 to Rs27 per unit, and LNG, which cost Rs17 to Rs20 per unit.”

Pakistan also imported power from Iran at a cost of Rs13 to Rs35 per unit, according to the report. Electricity at a rate of 20 paise per unit was used to reduce line losses.

The last time NEPRA approved an increase in power prices was in early November, when it announced a Rs1.68 per unit rise.

The new rates will not apply to people who consume 200 or fewer units of power, according to the notice published for the change.
