Pakistan, Azerbaijan hold talks on energy cooperation

Pakistan and Azerbaijan agreed on Wednesday to hold accelerated talks on energy cooperation between the two countries through strong engagement.

Bilateral relations were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, during which the two sides renewed their commitment to intensify and deepen bilateral engagement in various areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the sixth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) which was held here.

Both leaders assessed progress on several ongoing initiatives to promote connectivity, trade and investment, the state news agency said.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the need to promote close cooperation between the two countries on energy, an area of ​​great priority for his government.

Shehbaz Sharif told the Azerbaijani president that he had appointed the Minister of State for Oil as the focal point for bilateral energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Pakistan, which he visited Baku last month.

He also proposed leadership-level consultations in Islamabad aimed at promoting regional connectivity, which were well received.

Both leaders examined close and cordial bilateral ties in order to further strengthen cooperation on trade, investment, education, information technology, security, agriculture, connectivity and energy. The prime minister also briefed President Aliyev about his government’s efforts to restore the millions of people affected by flooding in Pakistan and their livelihoods damaged by the unprecedented natural disaster caused by climate change.
