SSP Korangi says inquiry found allegations attempt by a fake Facebook channel called ‘Dhoom Plus’ to defame the reputation of the famous denim manufacturing, Artistic Milliners.

DIG East says enemies of society spreading fake news. The Karachi police claim that social media reports of a female worker allegedly gang-raped by her colleagues at denim manufacturing, Artistic Milliners in Karachi’s Korangi are “fake news” being spread by “enemies”.

Reports of the alleged gang rape drew outrage on different social media platforms on Wednesday morning. Some reports even claimed that the employee in question had died.

The Korangi SSP, however, said that SDPO Korangi conducted an inquiry and found that the allegations were an attempt by a fake Facebook channel called ‘Dhoom Plus’ to defame the reputation of the company.

Meanwhile, KATI also expressed deep concerns over the allegations against the company.

“It was an attempt to defame the reputation of the company by Sagir Buledi press reporter and member of Sindh Sajagi Labour Federation, who is operating fake Dhoom plus channel on Facebook,” the Korangi SSP said in a letter to the secretary-general of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI).
“We reiterate that M/S Artistic Milliners (Pvt) Ltd. is a very old and valued member of KATI. It is one of the largest exporters of Pakistan earning precious foreign exchange for Pakistan and enjoying an excellent repute among industries,” read the KATI statement.

After the Police report, various journalists and officials turned up on Twitter and called out those spreading fake news.

TV Host Rabia Anum Obaid tweeted: “The Khi Viral Rape Story is Fake News! Spoke to Senior Crime Reporters of almost all major channels, Police, etc & no one confirmed it. Those who started the rumor have caused so much pain to so many ppl. Rape is No Joke. Plz plz be a little considerate while sharing such news”

While thanking the TV Host, Hamza Shafqaat, former Deputy Commissioner Islamabad retweeted her tweet.

Another correspondent at Arab News, Naimat Khan, tweeted: “Police is required to further investigate this case to bring facts to the fore. Nothing is confirmed yet. But social and mainstream media needs to exercise restraint and fact-check any allegation before publishing it”.

It is worth mentioning, that people across every section of society raised their voices against the alleged case as more than seventeen thousand tweets against the hashtag “#ArtisticMillinersRapeCase” were tweeted in a single day. Turning out fake news on such grave issues impact the cause of hundreds of unheard voices of a similarly heinous crime. As people rightly called out, we need to act sensibly.
