IHC rejects contempt plea against Maryam, Fazl, Sanaullah

The Islamabad High Court dismissed a contempt petition filed against PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, JUI Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and others as unmaintainable.

The IHC upheld the registrar’s objection that the petition had been filed in the wrong forum.

On Friday, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani heard the petition with the registrar’s objection.

Ali Ijaz Buttar, a local lawyer, asked the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the coalition leaders.

Justice Kiyani inquired of the lawyer as to the nature of his petition.

He responded by saying that Maryam, Rana Sanaullah, Fazlur Rehman, and others had made disparaging remarks about the judiciary on social media.

Justice Kiyani inquired of the lawyer whether the court was mentioned in those remarks. He advised him to file his petition with the Supreme Court or the High Court of Lahore.

The judge objected to the petitioner from Lahore filing his plea in the Islamabad High Court, stating that no one bothered to take notice of the contemptuous remarks when they were made, so why file the petition now?
