Former Gilgit-Baltistan chief justice Rana Shamim’s name is being added to the Exit Control List by the government.
According to sources, the prime minister instructed the law minister to place his name on the ECL as soon as possible, and the cabinet committee is meeting today to discuss the matter.
Insiders say Rana Shamim’s name will be added to the ECL in two or three days, and that he has already been blacklisted.
According to the sources, Advocate General Niazullah Khan Niazi wrote to the chief commissioner of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) requesting that the ex-name judge be added to the ECL.
The letter stated, “Rana Muhammad Shamim is facing contempt proceedings before the Honorable Islamabad High Court in Criminal Original No.309/2021 and has been served with show-cause Notice No.1628 dated 19.11.2021 in the same proceedings.”
“Should he escape the nation, severe harm may be caused to the existing processes and, in effect, to the rule of law and independence of the judiciary,” the letter added, implying that former Chief Justice Gilgit-Baltistan would travel abroad.
