The federal cabinet on Thursday approved Genera Aftab Sultan, a former director of the Intelligence Bureau, to serve as the new chairman of the National Accountability Bureau.
The news channel cited sources when it said that after consulting with coalition partners and opposition leader Raja Riaz in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proposed Aftab Sultan for the position of NAB chief.
Sultan served as the director general (DG) of the intelligence bureau (IB) during the administrations of both the PML-N and the PPP after retiring from the police department in grade 22.
Sultan will take over for Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, who was appointed to the position on October 11, 2017, as the head of the anti-corruption watchdog.
However, allegations of political victimisation by the then-opposition parties, which are now members of the coalition government, tainted the former NAB chairman’s tenure in office.
When PTI was still in power, the opposition leaders would frequently accuse Justice (r) Javed of engaging in “political engineering.”
