As monsoon rains battered parts of the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the National Disaster Management Authority and provincial governments to coordinate efforts to ensure public safety and the relocation of affected people.
On Monday, the prime minister stated that all efforts should be made to protect the people from losses, instructing the NDMA to collaborate with provincial governments as well as provincial disaster management authorities to assist the public caught in the persistent rains.
Shehbaz Sharif, who has called for the relocation of the affected population to safer areas, has directed federal government institutions to provide all possible assistance to provincial governments and institutions in dealing with the situation.
The prime minister also directed the authorities to establish temporary shelters for the affected people and ensure food supply there, in addition to activating medical teams for emergency medical aid and infectious disease prevention.
Shehbaz also directed the timely fumigation and deployment of necessary manpower and machinery to drain the rainwater.
The prime minister, who also spoke by phone with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, expressed his condolences for the loss of life and property in Karachi and other parts of the country.
“Just spoke to CM Syed Murad Ali Shah. Deeply saddened by the tragic losses due to torrential rains in Karachi. I am confident that Sindh government will rise to the occasion and bring life back to normal under the able leadership of CM Sindh,” Shehbaz wrote on Twitter, also offering to extend every possible support to the provincial government.
The prime minister requested that the NDMA provide rescue and relief assistance to the provincial government in order to protect the people of Karachi and other areas of Sindh.
Similarly, the prime minister directed the relevant authorities to ensure that electrocution incidents were avoided during the flooding situation.
The prime minister expressed solidarity with the victims of the torrential rains and assured that the federal government would use all available resources to protect and support the people.
