Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan challenged in the Supreme Court (SC) on Saturday the coalition government’s recent revisions to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) statute.
In the case, which named the NAB and the federal government as respondents, the former prime minister asked the Supreme Court to declare all revisions to sections 2, 4, 5, 26, 6, 14, 15, 23, 21, and 25 null and void since they violated the constitution.
On May 26, 2022, the National Assembly unanimously enacted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), (Second Amendment), Bill-2022, arguing that it was intended to prevent the misuse of the legislation and the persecution of politicians and opponents. The new law shortens the 90-day remand period to 14 days.
Highlighting key provisions of the bill, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the NAB law was utilised to silence opposition lawmakers’ voices.
All of the adjustments ordered by the superior judiciary from time to time, he said, adding that “from now on, NAB must finish probes within a period of six months.”
