Jahangir Khan Tareen, an “estranged” member of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), called a meeting of his group on Saturday to talk about the situation after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) removed the dissident MPAs from the Punjab Assembly.
The members of the group will think about whether or not to challenge the ECP’s decision in court, as well as plan their next steps.
In response to a request from Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, a three-member bench of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, disqualified 25 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) who voted for Hamza Shehbaz Sharif in the election for chief minister despite being told not to by their party.
MPAs from the Tareen group were also kicked out of their positions. In its decision, the ECP said that it had come to the conclusion that dissident PTI members had voted for the rival party’s candidate for Punjab chief minister during the election.
