Police arrested the cleric who performed Dua Zehra’s nikkah — the 14-year-old girl who mysteriously went missing from Karachi in April but later declared that she had run away from her home to marry 21-year-old Zaheer Ahmed.
According to the police, cleric Qari Hafiz Ghulam Mustafa performed a “bogus nikkah” for the minor and her husband because it is illegal in Sindh to marry off minors under the age of 18. Meanwhile, the age limit for marriage in Punjab is 16 years.
Police also revealed that the cleric, who was originally from Lahore’s New Samanabad area, had been transferred to an unknown location in order to be interrogated.
