Pakistani actress Nadia Jamil has revealed that she once declined an offer to appear in the iconic Bollywood film Veer-Zaara, choosing instead to care for her newborn son—a decision that, she says, defined her priorities at a crucial moment in her life and career.
Speaking during a Ramadan special transmission on a private television channel, Nadia Jamil reflected on early motherhood, work–life balance, and the difficult choices faced by women in the entertainment industry. She shared that discussions for her role in Veer-Zaara were nearly finalised when the offer arrived.
“I was offered a role in Veer-Zaara, and everything was almost finalised,” Jamil said. “But my baby was only three months old at the time. I felt very strongly that I needed to be with him during those early months.”
Family Support, Personal Choice
Jamil noted that her family stood firmly behind her career and encouraged her to accept the opportunity. “My mother even offered to travel with me for the shoot, and my in-laws were also very supportive,” she said. Despite this, she ultimately decided to step away from the project.

“Many people warned me that refusing such a big Bollywood film could negatively affect my career,” she added. “But for me, being present for my child mattered more.”
About Veer-Zaara
Released in 2004, Veer-Zaara was directed by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and starred Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in lead roles. The film became a global success and remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved romantic dramas.
The role Jamil was reportedly considered for—that of Pakistani lawyer Saamiya Siddiqui—was eventually played by Rani Mukerji, whose performance received widespread acclaim.
A Respected Career in Pakistani Television
Despite turning down a major Bollywood opportunity, Nadia Jamil went on to build an enduring and critically acclaimed career in Pakistan’s television industry. She rose to prominence in the 1990s and earned recognition for her performances in popular dramas such as Dhoop Mein Sawan, Meri Jaan, and Raqs-e-Bismil.
