ChatGPT to Launch Contact Sync Feature to Find Friends Using OpenAI Products

ChatGPT is preparing to roll out a new optional contact syncing feature that will allow users to check whether their friends are also using the chatbot or other products developed by OpenAI, according to a report by PC Magazine.

The feature is designed to make it easier for users to discover and connect with people they already know on ChatGPT, particularly for collaboration and group discussions.

How ChatGPT Contact Syncing Will Work

The contact syncing feature will be entirely voluntary, meaning users must explicitly choose to upload their phone contacts.

However, OpenAI has clarified that a person’s phone number may still be processed if:

  • Someone else who has that number saved in their contacts opts to sync their address book

This means phone numbers can be processed even if the individual has not personally enabled contact syncing.

OpenAI Says Phone Numbers Are Hashed, Not Stored in Plain Form

OpenAI emphasized that it does not store full contact details such as names, email addresses, or complete address book records.

Instead:

  • Only phone numbers are processed

  • Numbers are stored in a coded (hashed) format

  • Data is used solely to determine matches between users

According to the company, this approach is intended to reduce privacy risks while enabling social features.

Feature Linked to OpenAI’s Social Networking Plans

The update aligns with earlier reports from April suggesting that OpenAI is exploring social networking elements within ChatGPT.

While OpenAI has not publicly shared extensive details, the move indicates a gradual shift toward more community-driven and collaborative AI experiences.

The company’s generative video app, Sora, currently operates separately from ChatGPT and is considered a more experimental product.

Contact Syncing Could Improve Group Chats on ChatGPT

ChatGPT already supports group chats with up to 20 participants, allowing users to collaborate on research, brainstorming, and shared projects.

Contact syncing could:

  • Make it easier to invite friends into group chats

  • Simplify collaboration among existing contacts

  • Enhance shared AI-powered discussions

This could position ChatGPT as a stronger collaboration and productivity platform.

Users Can Revoke Contact Access Anytime

OpenAI confirmed that users will have full control over contact syncing. Access can be revoked at any time through:

  • Device privacy settings

  • App permission controls

This ensures users can opt out easily if they are uncomfortable with continued access.

Why This ChatGPT Update Matters

The introduction of contact syncing signals OpenAI’s broader ambition to transform ChatGPT from a standalone chatbot into a more social, connected platform.

However, the feature also raises important questions around data privacy, consent, and transparency, which are likely to draw attention as the rollout progresses.
