Speculation around a more affordable MacBook from Apple has been circulating for over a year, and new information now suggests the launch could be just weeks away.
According to well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to unveil a lower-cost MacBook as early as March, potentially bringing the starting price below the $1,000 mark.
No Compromise on Build Quality
Despite the reduced price, the upcoming MacBook is not expected to compromise on build quality. Gurman reports that the laptop will feature an aluminum chassis, similar to existing MacBook models.
Apple is reportedly using a new shell manufacturing process that is faster and more cost-efficient, allowing the company to maintain premium materials while reducing overall production costs. Internally, the device is said to carry the codename J700.
Powered by A18 Pro Chip and LCD Display
The budget MacBook is expected to be powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in Apple’s latest flagship iPhones. This marks a notable shift from Apple’s usual Mac-focused silicon but could help keep costs down while delivering solid performance for everyday tasks.
The laptop is also rumored to feature an LCD display, instead of the more expensive mini-LED or OLED panels found in higher-end models.
Multiple Color Options Planned
To broaden its appeal, Apple is reportedly testing multiple color finishes for the new MacBook. These include:
-
Blue
-
Silver
-
Dark grey
-
Light green
-
Pink
-
Light yellow
However, Gurman notes that not all tested colors may make it to the final retail version, with Apple expected to narrow down the options ahead of launch.
More MacBooks Coming Later This Year
In addition to the budget MacBook, Apple is also expected to release updated MacBook Pro models later this year, along with a MacBook Air featuring an OLED display.
More concrete details are likely to emerge as Apple’s rumored March launch window approaches.
