Punjab University Removes SZIC Director Over Illegal Tree Cutting Allegations

Punjab University (PU) has removed the Director of the Shaikh Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC) following allegations of illegal tree cutting on the university campus, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to an official notification issued by the university registrar, Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah, acting as Chairman of the SZIC Board of Governors, relieved Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdullah of his duties with immediate effect.

Acting Director Appointed as Interim Measure

In a temporary arrangement, the vice chancellor appointed Prof. Dr. Samina Saadia as the acting director of SZIC. A university spokesperson said she will continue to hold the additional charge until the federal government appoints a permanent director for the center.

The notification stated that Prof. Abdullah had been serving as SZIC Director since March 2023. Copies of the removal order have been sent to relevant university departments for implementation.

University Takes Strict Stance on Environmental Protection

Commenting on the development, the vice chancellor described illegal tree cutting as an “unforgivable crime” and warned that no leniency would be shown toward those responsible.

He emphasized that the protection of green spaces, enforcement of environmental regulations, and preservation of the campus ecosystem remain top priorities for the university administration.

Broader Focus on Campus Sustainability and Accountability

The action reflects Punjab University’s stated commitment to environmental sustainability and institutional accountability. University officials said further inquiries may follow if violations of environmental laws or campus regulations are confirmed.
