Singer-songwriter Kate Bush says she is “heartbroken” after her close friend Matthew Upham went missing during a Christmas Day swim in Budleigh Salterton, Devon.
Bush, 67, described the well-known local antiques dealer as one of her “very dearest friends” whom she had known for nearly 30 years. She said his family and loved ones were devastated by the tragic incident.
Emergency Services Called After Two Swimmers Could Not Be Found

A major coastguard search operation took place before being called off at approximately 17:00 GMT. Police confirmed that enquiries remain ongoing.
“The World Has Lost Someone Incredibly Special,” Says Kate Bush
Posting a tribute on her official website, Bush praised Upham’s warmth, kindness, and love for life.
“He was one of those people who touched everyone he met,” she wrote. “He was extraordinarily kind and thoughtful and lived life to the full. He was also a great deal of fun.”
Bush said Upham was a strong and experienced swimmer who also loved kayaking and respected the sea.
“It’s so tragic that he lost his life this way,” she added. “The world has lost someone incredibly special. Thank you, Matthew, for being one of the best friends anyone could have.”
Family Express Gratitude to Emergency Services
In a statement shared on his business’s Instagram page, Upham’s family described him as “deeply loved” and said he would be forever missed.
They thanked emergency responders, including the RNLI and Coastguard, for their professionalism, dedication, and compassion during the search and requested privacy as they grieve.
