Here’s How the FIFA World Cup 2026 Draw Will Work

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw set to be revealed tonight, fans are preparing for one of the most anticipated moments leading into the expanded tournament.

To help fans understand the process, we’ve broken down the draw format, pot distribution, qualification landscape, and the rules that will shape the final groups.

42 Teams Qualified, Six More to Come

So far, 42 nations have confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup:

Asia 8
Africa 9
North America 6 (including hosts)
South America 6
Oceania 1
Europe 12

Another six spots remain open, mainly through playoffs, including four additional European qualifiers to be decided in March.

Playoff Paths for Final Six Spots

Play-off Path Teams
UEFA Play-off A Italy, Wales, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
UEFA Play-off B Ukraine, Poland, Albania, Sweden
UEFA Play-off C Turkey, Slovakia, Kosovo, Romania
UEFA Play-off D Denmark, Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland, North Macedonia
FIFA Play-off 1 DR Congo, Jamaica, New Caledonia
FIFA Play-off 2 Iraq, Bolivia, Suriname

How the Draw Pots Work

The qualified teams will be placed into four pots of 12, with each World Cup group drawn using one team from each pot.

Pots are based on FIFA rankings:

  • Pot 1: The three host nations (USA, Mexico, Canada) + the nine highest-ranked teams
  • Pot 2: Next 12 best-ranked sides
  • Pot 3: Next 12
  • Pot 4: Lowest six ranked + six undecided playoff slots

Pot 4 is expected to be especially unpredictable, as several playoff contenders are ranked higher than teams in Pots 2 and 3.

Key Draw Restrictions

Several rules shape how the groups can be formed:

  • Each group must contain at least one European team.
  • No two teams from the same region can be placed together, except Europe, which can have up to two.
  • Intercontinental playoff winners face extra restrictions to prevent regional overlap.

Top-ranked teams must be separated:

  • Spain (1st) and Argentina (2nd) cannot be drawn on the same side of the bracket.
  • France (3rd) and England (4th) must also be kept apart early.

Many believe that these rules reduce the chance of early upsets and underdog runs similar to Morocco’s 2022 semifinal campaign.

Host Nations Already Placed

The hosts have been pre-assigned:

USA → Group D

Mexico → Group A

Canada → Group B

The trio automatically qualified as part of the joint hosting arrangement.

When Will the 2026 World Cup Draw Begin

The event kicks off at 5:00 PM GMT (10:00 PM local time) on 5 December. Supermodel Heidi Klum, comedian Kevin Hart, and actor-producer Danny Ramirez will serve as hosts for the evening.

Ahead of the draw, live performances will feature Andrea Bocelli, Robbie Williams, and Nicole Scherzinger, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former US President Donald Trump are set to deliver speeches.

The ceremony will then showcase video highlights of the finalist teams, introductions, and finally, the draw itself.

Ex-Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand will oversee the draw, assisted by broadcaster Samantha Johnson and a lineup of sports legends, including Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, Aaron Judge, and Shaquille O’Neal.

To close out the 90-minute event, the Village People will perform “YMCA”, bringing the glittering ceremony to a lively finale.
