Expected public holidays schedule for 2026 revealed

DUBAI – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expected to offer its residents at least 12 public holidays in 2026, including several extended long weekends, according to preliminary projections.

The tentative dates, based on astronomical calculations and government decisions, have sparked anticipation among locals and expatriates alike.

The list of expected holidays includes key occasions from the New Year to the UAE National Day (Al-‘Ittihad Day). Although the final holiday schedule is announced annually by the UAE government, these projections give an early glimpse of what residents can expect in 2026.

The first public holiday of the year will be New Year’s Day, which falls on Thursday, January 1. Following that, the celebration of Eidul Fitr is anticipated to span from March 20 to March 22, marking the end of Ramadan with a possible three-day break.

The month of May will also bring significant holidays, as Eidul Azha is expected to fall between May 27 and May 29, with additional leave anticipated around the 26th, when Hajj pilgrims will gather at Arafat. This could potentially create a six-day-long weekend.

The Islamic New Year, marked by the 1st of Muharram, is projected to fall on June 16, followed by the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday on 12th Rabi al-Awwal, expected on August 19.

The UAE National Day (Yawm al-Ittihad) will take place on December 2 and 3 (Wednesday and Thursday), creating a long four-day weekend for workers.

It’s important to note that these holidays are based on the Islamic lunar calendar, meaning their exact dates are subject to moon sightings and official government announcements.

Residents in the UAE will not only enjoy 12 public holidays in 2026, but they will also have the chance to make the most of extended weekends.

The final dates for these holidays will be confirmed by the UAE government based on moon sightings and official declarations.
