ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly secretariat has made it clear to the speaker that violating the Supreme Court’s decision to hold a vote on a no-trust motion will result in contempt of court proceedings.
According to sources, secretariat officials have communicated that compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision is unavoidable.
“We have communicated to the speaker that there is no alternative to today’s vote on the no-trust motion,” they said, adding, “If there is no vote, it will be tantamount to contempt of court.”
Supreme Court decision
The Supreme Court (SC) has handed down its decision in the suo motu case, declaring the deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) ‘unconstitutional’.
The apex court reserved its verdict in the suo motu case challenging the National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri’s ruling on a no-trust motion against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court upheld the opposition’s no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Khan. The Supreme Court ruled that the deputy speaker’s decision violated the Constitution and thus nullified the National Assembly’s dissolution (NA).
The Supreme Court directed that the vote on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan be concluded immediately. The NA speaker has been directed not to adjourn the session indefinitely.
Additionally, the apex court ordered the reinstatement of the prime minister and federal cabinet, as well as the restoration of the NA proceedings prior to the deputy speaker’s April 3 ruling.
The Supreme Court directed the speaker of the National Assembly (NA) to convene the session on April 9, Saturday, to vote on the no-trust motion.
The Supreme Court’s decision will have no effect on the effectiveness of Article 63 (A), but the top court ruled that the government cannot prevent any lawmaker from voting on the no-confidence motion.
