IHC dismisses Gilani’s appeal against Sanjrani’s election

The Islamabad High Court has dismissed former Prime Minister and PPP leader Yousuf Raza Gilani’s intra-court challenge seeking annulment of Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s election.

The high court issued the reserved verdict yesterday on Friday.

The judgment on former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s plea contesting the election of Senate Chairman Sanjrani and demanding its annulment has been reserved by a two-judge bench of the Islamabad High Court comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jehangir.

On Thursday, the court heard the matter again and deferred its decision.

Previously, a single bench considered Gilani’s appeal and dismissed it, ruling that it was not maintainable.

The court had deferred its decision on the former premier’s intra-court appeal until December 22, 2021. However, in order to ponder further on several matters, the IHC heard the case again and reserved its decision on the appeal yesterday.

Gilani, who was also running for Senate chairman, was defeated by Sanjrani after the presiding officer disregarded seven votes cast in his favor.

Sanjrani will continue to serve as Senate chairman following the IHC decision.
