The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved an Rs3.27 per unit rise in energy pricing on Thursday due to a monthly fuel cost adjustment.
According to a Nepra announcement, the rise in electricity costs would be applied to April invoices.
Because of the increase in electricity tariffs, Karachi’s power consumers will face an additional burden of Rs 3.58 billion.
Meanwhile, the Nepra held a hearing on a proposal to raise power tariffs by Rs4.68 due to a monthly fuel cost adjustment for the month of February.
“The prime minister’s assistance package will not impose additional costs on power users,” says Nepra Chairman.
“14% less electricity was generated from hydel energy in February,” claimed Nepra officials, adding that the shortage was mitigated by furnace oil and LNG output. They also mentioned a global increase in fuel prices.
Rafiq Sheikh, a member of Nepra Sindh, asked for an audit of the prior fuel adjustment, claiming that there was always a significant gap between Cppa and Nepra statistical data.
“Violation of merit order imposed an Rs1.37 billion penalty on power users,” Nepra officials said.
“The power customers have borne a Rs1.37 billion burden as a result of the LNG shortfall,” they noted.
“All of this adds an additional burden of 17 paisa per unit on power consumers,” they claim.
